He-Man

I gotta say that Adam's disguise of wearing a shirt and pants was ingenious. I mean, with those pants and that shirt on, there's flipping no one out there who would recognize him as He-Man. Even though he and He-Man both have green cats.

Dungeons And Dragons

If I were riding an amusement park ride, and I got shot into some strange other world and transformed into a cavalier or an acrobat, I'd be pissed.

Thundarr The Barbarian

And then there was Thundarr The Barbarian and his good buddy Hoopla the Mott. Hoopla was pretty good at throwing stuff, grunting, and flying helicopters.

Picture Pages!

Remember Picture Pages? I do.

I remember yelling from my parent's bedroom "MOM, BILL COSBY IS TELLING US HOW TO ORDER PICTURE PAGES!!". And she was already trying to write it down but couldn't hear because I was yelling.

I remember getting the picture pages, then filling them all out in one day. Remember how COOL it sounded when Bill put his pen to the paper

Teaching children to be athletic

I just saw a CNN report about obesity in children. The report closed with a feature on a woman dedicated to teaching kids about physical fitness by having fun with sports, weightlifting and cardio.

That report sent me on a flashback.

7th grade. El Paso, TX. Coach Stowe was my P.E. teacher. For P.E. class he took to the YMCA to play basketball.

One day Coach Stowe decided it would be fun to pit the most athletic kids against the least athletic kids. I was on the bad team. We lost and it was humiliating. And I remember thinking "this sucks and I hate this."

That game was one example of what my gym coaches in grade school taught me: that I wasn't athletic, I sucked at sports, and P.E. class was not fun and something that I should fear.

What I should have been learning then was basic game strategy. The thrill of competition. That there was more to life than video games and pop-tarts. And so on.

Instead I learned to dread P.E. and sports. Every day I stood against the wall of that gym and waited to get picked last or next-to-last. Only "The Boz" got picked after me. Back then when that kind of thing really mattered to me, that sucked. And that "getting picked last" thing spilled over into the rest of school. Athletic kids were generally cooler.

Coach Stowe should have been paying attention to the least athletic kids in his class and working with them to find ways to get them integrated into the games and get them to enjoy themselves. I believe that his intentions were good... but that one day of pitting best vs. worst really sucked.

I hope that P.E. coaches today get that.

Teach kids to love sport.

Now that I'm a little older and a little more athletic... it would be AWESOME to play basketball against Coach Stowe. Or better yet, some kind of contact sport like football.

The Past Month Of My Life

A lot has happened in the last month. It's worth writing about.

1) My son Calum was born. He is amazing.
2) At work, I led a deep dive review of Y! News, presented to a big group of Y! News people from all over the world and presented to the CEO for the first time. I made sure that I presented to her as early as possible on Tuesday... because at 4:45PM on June 16th I closed my laptop and grabbed a taxi back to the city to get lisa and head to the hospital.
3) A week later at work, the Health Check. Another big presentation to important people.
4) Farah Fawcett, Michael Jackson, Karl Malden, Billy Mays and Steve McNair all passed away.
5) TrueBlood debuted with a new season, and Lafayette didn't die.

I'm hoping for a calmer, less eventful July.

Definition of Success

My definition of personal success has changed a lot in my short 36 years.

Thirty years ago: Convinced father to purchase Star Wars Hammerhead action figure for me. Success! (side note: the next day, was playing with hammerhead in giant sand pile. left hammerhead in sand pile. sand pile used in cement for swimming pool. hammerhead still in that pool somewhere...)

Twenty years ago: Successfully constructed my own personal beer bong from some plastic tubing and an oil funnel. Named bong "robo-bong". (side note: robo-bong was destroyed in 1992 in a freak accident. thankfully.)

Ten years ago: Brave enough to get on a stage and try to perform Steely Dan's "Kid Charlemagne" guitar solo. I thought it went well. (side note: I taped that performance. it didn't go well. ten years later i still make mistakes on that solo).

Yesterday: Registered my facebook vanity URL with my full name, no spaces, no underscores, dashes, dots. nothing. just my pure clean name. awaiting seo credit impatiently.

Looking forward to 2019!
